Choosing a Website Builder

When choosing a website builder, you’ll want to first consider what type of user you are. If you have some coding ability or you’re a front-end web designer, you’ll be looking for a different set of options than if you’re building your first website.

For the former, look for the ability to go beyond drag and drop visual web design functionality to adding custom css and enabling integrations. For the latter, you’ll want the most user-friendly UX coupled with plentiful template options.

And speaking of template options, you’ll want to look not just at quantity, but quality. It’s easy to boast hundreds of templates if they are all very simple or variations of one another. Look for the use cases you need and match your business to the provider.

Last, don’t be afraid to pay a couple extra bucks to get the right fit. You’ll be happier not spending hours recreating a template on platform A that you found on platform B, but didn’t go with just because it was a few dollars a month more expensive.

If you’re a web designer, templates aren’t going to matter to you. Instead, look for quality of life features that help you design quickly and remove pain points you find the most tedious. Certain builders allow better duplication, reusing code for dynamic pages, etc. Assess your ROI by looking at how much time savings you believe the tools will create and compare against their monthly cost.
